Among the many excuses the U.S. government had were that Iraq obtained weapons of mass destrcution (despite knowing the opposite was true), that it needed to remove the corrupt government (which it instituted in the first place) and that it needed to send troops to stabilise the area (even though their presence caused far more harm than good).
