Some people use sharks for flip flops, food, fabric, and to keep them from eating people. All of this is wrong. I highly suggest not doing any of this.

Yes, they are very helpful. They are helpful when they are dead or alive. When they are swimming they eat over populated fish. In a way they help us breathe, there are plants in the ocean that produce 70% of the earths oxygen, and absorb greenhouse gas. Many fish eat this plant and sharks eat the fish that eat this plant so in a way they help us breathe. When sharks are dead they are also very helpful. Sharks cartilage has anticancer activity that can help cure cancer. Also sharks can be eaten. Their skin can be used as sandpaper and made into leather. Their teeth can be made into weapons and used as jewelry. Sharks may one day cure Heart disease, sharks blood contains a special clotting compound that scientists may one day use to help cure heart disease. Many people think it is sad that people kill sharks but in a way it is a good thing it would be bad if we had too many sharks or not enough sharks.

Sharks are critical not only to maintaining the ocean's ecosystem, but are critical to all oxygen-breathing life on the planet. The main diet of most species of shark consists mostly of smaller fish-a large portion of which feed on phytoplankton. Phytoplankton are photosynthesizing microorganisms that are responsible for at least half of the replenishment of oxygen in the Earth's atmosphere, and without a larger predator to feed on the fish that consume the phytoplankton, their population levels along with the amount of oxygen (and inversely, the level of carbon dioxide) would diminish.
