If this person were truly a "friend", in the context that they would be more than an acquaintance, then it should have been well known to you that your "friend" was a Witness. If this were simply a work or "our kids go to the same school" situation, then it is possible that the subject could never have conveniently been brought up. Not all of us Witnesses get the opportunity to discuss spiritual matters with all whom we know- sometimes it just is not practical or prudent. In my particular instance, working as a government contractor, I am forbidden from engaging in "proselytizing" at the risk of losing my job. In spite of this, everyone at work knows that my wife and I are Witnesses, and whenever I have the opportunity to speak "in defense of the Good News", I do it.
Meanwhile, other than the embarrassment of putting YOU in this awkward position by not at least professing their faith to you, your "friend" should not be offended by your gesture. Hopefully, after the event was finished, then they would be brave enough to discuss their beliefs with you and it would be up to you as to whether the friendship still held merit to continue. See, we are quite reasonable, yes?
