What herment crabs eat?

In the sea they eat small snails, dead fish, and anything else they find. They find most of their food by "smell" using their antennae. Crabs and lobsters will eat decomposing animals that really smell a lot. In captivity they can be fed on bits of fish or meat preferably fresh.

Do crayfish have a nervous system?

Unlike humans who have a big brain and lots of nerves to send signals down the body, the hermit crab and other crustaceans have a much more primitive system. They have a primitive ventral nerve cord and ganglia system similar to an earthworm. Hermit Crabs have good vision thanks to their compound eyes on stalks (although can't look below them) and sensory organs are found on the body. Like true crabs, hermit crabs have bristles and hairs all over their body - but mostly on their walking legs - which act as touch receptors. The long antennae of hermit crabs - longer than other crabs - have smell sensors, used to find their food. Smell detectors are also found on the legs. When a hermit crab walks over food, its legs smell it, and the chelipeds quickly grasp it and move it into the mouth.

When is a hermit crab active?

Hermit crabs are nocturnal, so they crawl around the most at night. But you can catch them moving also at afternoon or dawn. If you want him/her to start moving, try placing food that has strong smell at afternoon.

Dose a hermit crab fall completely out of its shell?

Hermit crabs can. It happens when the hermit crab is changing its shell and falls over or when the hermit crab is dead it slides out or falls out of its shell! Sadly they can't always get back in there shells and die.

Why is my hermit crab's eyes white?

Your hermit crab is pink because it just molted. hermit crabs are vertibrates which means they need to molt to grow. hermit crabs burrow underground to molt and stay their for a week to months.

Why are your hermit crabs burrowing?

your hermit crabs are burrowing because they are about to molt. hermit crabs have exoskeletons so they have to molt or shed their exoskeleton to grow. so they dig underground to do that because hermies are vunrable they will stay underground to weeks to months NEVER dig them up. you know if they are dead if you smell rotting egg.

What do hermit crabs use to feel and smell things?

They have two sets of antennae, the longer set is for feeling things and the other set is like a tongue, they can taste with it, they have no tongue.
