The largest population of Irish immigrants to America in 1750 settled on and focused in the Middle colonies. The colonies of New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania were popular places of destination for the Irish immigrants who, in many cases, came to this country landless and chose to settle and make their way in the cities.
It is said that the 1st governor in New Jersey colony in the 1600s to 1700s was Andrew Hamilton. He 1st became governor of East Jersey in 1687. Later on, he became governor of also West Jersey in 1692.
It was named after Jersey, England. When English immigrants came over to America, they named it New Jersey after their homeland.
