It happened in 1960. (I'm not sure about the rest of the date.) Francis Gary Powers was flying an American Spy Plane. As he was flying, the plane was shot down over the Soviet Union. He was taken captive and forced to admit he was spying. (And you already told the rest.) Because the President refused to apologize, Krushchev cancelled his next meeting with the president that they were to have. (Which I believe was the PS, I'm not sure. Sorry!)
Hello i am in junior high and our social studies teacher is making us do a 2000 word report on the U-2 spy plane incident. I am wondering about this question two and I am not sure if the war would have ended sooner if this incident hadent occured. I feel strongly that we would be on better relations with the Soviet Union if we hadent have sent the U-2 planes. But, I fully understand why we sent them there.
The Four Power Paris Summit shortly after the incident was a bust. Ike was caught in a series of denials (call that bold faced lies) and US relations with Pakistan were set back for decades. US Military and Aviation prestiege took a hit, and Soviet Defense capabilities received world wide attention.
01 may 1960........The 1960 U-2 incident occurred during the Cold War on May 1, 1960, during the presidency of Dwight D. Eisenhower and during the leadership of Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev, when an American U-2 spy plane was shot down over Soviet Union airspace. The United States government at first denied the plane's purpose and mission, but then was forced to admit its role as a covert surveillance aircraft when the Soviet government produced its remains (largely intact) and surviving pilot, Francis Gary Powers. Coming just over two weeks before the scheduled opening of an East-West summit in Paris, the incident was a great embarrassment to the United States[1] and prompted a marked deterioration in its relations with the Soviet Union.
The United States used the Lockheed U2 and Convair PB4Y Privateer to gather intelligence about the Soviet Union and China before the advent of spy satellite technology.

The U2 incident was where A united States spy plane was shot down over Russia. The pilot was Gary Powers and he was captured by the Russians, who used this to embarass the US.
U2 has really had a huge impact on music. With Bono's soaring vocals and The Edge's ringing guitar sound. They have paved the way for many contemporary bands.
The plane was shot down by a missile on 1st may 1960,over the USSR.
it gave the Soviets proof we were spying on them
