If by the "Enlightenment" you mean the European 17th century rise of scholastic , scientific , & philosophical thought ... At the time religions , like Christianity were too absorbed in ritual & tradition , than they were the science of "humanity" . Thinkers like Leibniz & Voltaire realised , that the "state" {central government , from where our nation is governed} should be free from the influence of religion , because it was too irrational , and really a government in a democracy should be based on humanity , not on say Catholicism or Protestantism.
