Pemberton's surrender of Vicksburg to Grant is one of the most significant turning points of the war. It closed the Mississippi to southern traffic, preventing the Southern States West of the Mississippi from sending reinforcement and supplies to the Southern States in the East. It allowed the North to strike with impunity anywhere in the Mississippi Valley. It set the stage for Grant's victory at Lookout Mountain which, itself, opened the door to Sherman's March to the Sea which destroyed the South's ability to supply its troops at the front. Vicksburg sealed the fate of the South. It completed the second phase of the Anaconda Plan, gradually suffocating the South into submission.

Most battles in the US Civil War were won by the Union. The Battle of New Orleans as example was an important Union victory. Another example would be the Battle of Gettysburg.

As an important aside, most Civil War battles were fought in the South. The reason for this that the objective of the Union was to destroy the Confederacy. On the other hand, the objective of the South was not to conquer the North, but rather to have the North cease & desist in their attacks.

By far, the most devastating battle lost by the Confederacy was at Gettysburg. The South could afford the losses elsewhere. A victory at Gettysburg would all but cause the American ( Northern ) public to opt out of this war many in the North found horrifying. It needs to be remembered that shortly after Gettysburg, artillery units ( howitzers )from Gettysburg were used to end draft riots in New York City. A Confederate army holding the state capital of Pennsylvania and threatening Philadelphia, Washington DC and Baltimore would have ended Lincoln's plans for keeping the USA as one nation.
