People settled in California many because during the time immigrates where going there the gold rush was going on. The growth in California also led to a need of a more effective government which resulted in the writing of a state constitution and then statehood in 1850. Mostly Mormons (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) settled in Utah to find peace from persecution of others for their beliefs.
