Since colonial times (1600-1800s) it became an important seaport in the Pacific Ocean, specifically developed for trade between the Americas and Spanish holdings in Southeast Asia (i.e. The Philippines). It became a popular tourist destination in the 1950's as many Hollywood celebrities often visited and purchased real state around the city. Since the 1960's it became the favorite tourist destination for people in central Mexico, especially from Mexico City.

Nowadays it is the 16th largest city in Mexico, with a population of 863,438 (2010 census). It has been heavily hit by the current war on drugs (2006-) and is considered one of the most dangerous cities in Mexico. This has resulted in less visitors due to the violence, but is still considered one of the largest receivers of national and international tourists in Mexico.
