Diwali is the most important festival of Hinduism.

It is so important that people practicing religions derived from Hinduism, like Jainism, Buddhism, Sikhism also celebrate it for their own reasons.

The reason why it is the most important day is that is that it is the day on which a Hindu tries to know his real worth.

It is for this reason that Hindu business men start the financial year from this festival.

The lights are symbolic of the fact that the real worth of the Hindu shouldn't be based on illusions.

It is for this reason that it is celebrated as the day on which demons like Ravana, Narakasura, etc are killed.

Since Vishnu is the god who shows us our real worth the festival is associated with Vishnu and his incarnations.
