There are MANY different types of gravel - one for each of your needs. If it is for your driveway, the gravel is usually made of crushed rocks (in large sizes). If you're looking for the smaller version of gravel, the sand-like verson, they also vary from sizes down to a grain of sand, to the driveway-like gravel.
First, a layer of gravel is laid down on the road needed. Asphalt or concrete, depending on the road being made, is laid down on the gravel. This creates a strong road surface. After it is laid down, a road roller flattens the surface to make it comfortable.

You can find flint by digging up gravel. There is a chance you will get a piece of flint from digging up one block of gravel, though most of the time you only get gravel. Gravel can be found in caves, by a river bank, and the bottom of the ocean (good luck digging up gravel down there!). Gravel really doesn't have much use, though it is known for making "gravel elevators." Flint, however, is used to make arrows for bows and arrows.
