Term of office :
The President holds office for a term of 5 years and is eligible for re-election. He may, by writing to the Vice-President, resign his office. His resignation has to be communicated by the Vice-President to the speaker of the lok sabha.
The first president of India had the unique distinction of being elected a second time. He remained in office from January 26, 1950 to may 12, 1962.

Karnataka was brought under the President's rule for the second time on 20th Nov 2007. The proclamation was signed by the Indian President, Pratibha Patil. The rule was imposed due to the collapse of the BJP led coalition government. It was also the first BJP led government in South India.
