If you mean what is the "Rule of Thumb" it is an old law that states a man may beat his wife with a switch, (branch, stick), no bigger around than his "thumb". And we think we are civilized!?!

This is completely wrong. There has never been any such law. The urban legend stems from a court case (not a law) in which the phrase "rule of thumb" never even appears. The judge only mentions that "moderate chastisement" of a wife by her husband is not criminal. Not at all excusable, and the judge was publicly excoriated for his ruling at the time. But this is not the origin of the "rule of thumb." The phrase "rule of thumb" comes from woodworkers using the length of their thumbs for measuring instead of using rulers, and it has been in use at least since the 1600s, long before the supposed "law" about wife-beating. A "rule of thumb" is a convenient approximation.

What is rule of thumb?

A useful principle but not intended to be reliable in every situation. Meaning the situation applies to everything because long ago the rule of thumb meant 1 inch equals your top of your thumb, so thats the rule of thumb. Over the years it has taken a more figurative meaning.

Use rule of thumb in a sentence?

'Rule of Thumb' was a very wise English rule that stated a man was not allowed to beat his wife with a stick thicker than his thumb. Since that time, 'thumb rule' has come to describe various rough general guages for various activities and actions; waiting half-an-hour after eating before swimming, even though ther is no medical reason to do so, has become a 'thumb rule' for mothers. A case could be made for the 'Third Date Rule' being a rule of thumb. In Finance, the 'Rule of 72', i.e. that a given interest rate will double when the rate and the years multiplied equal 72; 6% interest for 12 years will double your money, 2% times 36 years, etc., would be a rule of thumb.

How does a change in temperature from 25o to 50o affect the rate of the reaction rate?

The general rule of thumb is that the reaction rate will double for each 10ºC change in temperature. So, going from 25 to 50 degrees, would increase the reaction rate APPROXIMATELY by 4.5 times. This is not a law, but just a general rule of thumb for approximating the rate.

What were the first elementary methods used to measure length in ancient times?

Body parts. This is where the old English measurements - feet, rule of thumb, and so on, come from. The top joint of the thumb, incidentally, is usually (in an adult) around 25mm or 1 inch.
