A seigneury was a system where small pieces of land along the St. Lawrence river were divided out among the farmers to settle. The Land lord (seigneur) was in charge of this matter. The land lord was given a house and some of the farmers profit by permission of the king . The people living on the seigneury were called habitants. The habitants had to farm and settle the land. Every so often they would have to give the land lord a payment. For example, the payment could be some wheat or a few chickens.

well go look for it First of all it's called the seigneurial system, not the seigneury system. A seigneury is a lot of land, or manor that the Seigneur assigns to Habitants (colonists or settlers wanting to buy land). The seigneurial system allows all habitants to have access to a waterway. Another interesting fact, is the French, unlike the English, divided their lots among their children. For example, if a family were to have five sons, each son would receive 1/6 of the land.
No there were different divisions of lines. Not only that the lines weren't exactly straight. There were 3 important Roles, they were The Intendant, Bishop, and The Governor. This is most of what you are ALL learning in History...
Life on the Seigneury was busy. Farmers have to first clear their land, cutting down trees with an axe and removing tree stumps and rocks. They then had to grow crops. They grew wheat for bread and hay for their animals. They raised chickens and pigs, kept cows for milk and meat, sheep for wool, and horses to pull plows and sleighs. Even children have to do these things unless they are to young. Did you know that in New France even the Seingeur works like a farmer as well? Wealth was not an important part in the Seingeur's life in New France.
Yes, the seigneur is a big part of new france because their jobs were to divide the land for the habitants, see the population of the people in New France that is on the seigneury. Without a seigneur none of those things can't be done.
CharacteristicsA seigneury was granted to a seigneur. The seigneur was obliged to rent long lots (concessions) on his seigneury to tenant-farmers called censitaires (habitants). The lots were narrow rectangular tracts of land found perpendicular to a river allowing more settlers access to the river. The seigneur also built roads, a mill, an oven, and held a court to settle disputes. In return, the censitaires cleared their lots, paid rent as a portion of their income and in the form of food and produce (cens et rentes), worked 3 days a year without pay (corvée), and paid a tax (lods et ventes) if they sold their lots.
The seigneurial system was strips of land, habbitants, seigneurs and rivers put all together to create a farming system. It took place in new France back in the 1600's. It was a matter of masters and servants (the people pyramid). Everybody on the farm worked: kids, women, men...everybody.
first of all its the seigneurial system, the seigneur is the head of the place which is called the seigneury. second of all the king granted the seigneur and his family land for free, the seigneur is then to divide up the land and give it to habitant for a seigneurial due or in other words the habitant pay rent. the habitant are farmers. hope this helps :P
