According to Merriam-Webster online:

Definition of CATAMITE: a boy kept by a pederast

The word is Latin, and comes from "Ganymede", who in Greek mythology was one of Zeus' lovers.

Webster goes on to say: "Greek mythological character. Ganymede was an attractive Trojan boy who was abducted to Olympus to become the cupbearer of Zeus and later his homosexual lover."

Who was ganymede?

In Greek mythology, Ganymede(Greek: Γανυμήδης, Ganymēdēs) is a divine hero whose homeland was Troy. Homer describes Ganymede as the most beautiful of mortals. He was the son of Tros of Dardania, from whose name "Troy" was supposed to derive, and of Callirrhoe. His brothers were Ilus and Assaracus. In one version of the myth, he is abducted by Zeus, in the form of an eagle, to serve as cup-bearer in Olympus. The myth was a model for the Greek social custom ofpaiderastía, the socially acceptable erotic relationship between a man and a youth. The Latin form of the name was Catamitus, from which the English word "catamite" derives.Ganymede was abducted by Zeus from Mount Ida, near Troy in Phrygia. Ganymede had been tending sheep, a rustic or humble pursuit characteristic of a hero's boyhood before his privileged status is revealed. Zeus either sent an eagle or turned himself into an eagle to transport the youth to Mount Olympus. Roman-era relief depicting the eagle, Ganymede wearing his Phrygian cap, and a third figure, possibly his grieving fatherIn the Iliad, Zeus is said to have compensated Ganymede's father Tros by the gift of fine horses, "the same that carry the immortals", delivered by the messenger god Hermes. Tros was consoled that his son was now immortal and would be the cupbearer for the gods, a position of much distinction. Walter Burkert found a precedent for the Ganymede myth on an Akkadian seal that depicts the hero-king Etana riding heavenwards on an eagle. In Olympus, Zeus granted him eternal youth and immortality and the office of cupbearer to the gods, supplanting Hebe. Edmund Veckenstedt associated Ganymede with the genesis of the intoxicating drink mead, which had a traditional origin in Phrygia. All the gods were filled with joy to see the youth, except for Hera, Zeus's consort, who regarded Ganymede as a rival for her husband's affection. Zeus later put Ganymede in the sky as the constellation Aquarius, which is associated with that of the Eagle (Aquila). A moon of Jupiter, the planet named for Zeus's Roman counterpart, was named Ganymede by astronomer Simon Marius.Ganymede was afterwards also regarded as the genius of the fountains of the Nile, the life-giving and fertilizing river. Thus the divinity that distributed drink to the gods in heaven became the genius who presided over the due supply of water on earth.Ganymede pouring Zeus a libation (Attic red-figure calyx krater by the Eucharides Painter, c. 490-480 BCE)Plato accounts for the pederastic aspect of the myth by attributing its origin to Crete, where the social custom of paiderastía was supposed to have originated (see "Cretan pederasty").He has Socratesdeny that Ganymede was the "catamite" of Zeus, and say the god loved him non-sexually for his psychē, "mind" or "soul," giving the etymology of his name as ganu-, "taking pleasure," and mēd-, "mind." Ganymede, he points out, was the only one of Zeus's lovers who was granted immortality. In poetry, Ganymede became a symbol for the beautiful young male who attracted homosexual desire and love. He is not always portrayed as acquiescent: in the Argonautica of Apollonius of Rhodes, Ganymede is furious at the god Eros for having cheated him at the game of chance played with knucklebones, and Aphrodite scolds her son for "cheating a beginner." The Augustan poet Virgil portrays the abduction with pathos: the boy's aged tutors try in vain to draw him back to earth, and his hounds bay uselessly at the sky. The loyal hounds left calling after their abducted master is a frequent motif in visual depictions, and is referenced also by Statius:

Did Colin Morgan play a gay character?

Yes! He played several. For TV shows, the most popular would be as "John Leary" in the Christmas Special of "The Catherine Tate Show." This is done as a comedy, about his family outing him out to their church, his friends, and each other - the funniest of which is the edible present that he got for Christmas and being caught in bed with another boy. This is not to mention the homoerotic subtext of "Merlin": the only reason for his life and his magic to start having meaning, is when he finds out that his entire life is for only one purpose (to unite Albion with the Prince of Camelot). He takes this to extreme even as magic is outlawed as his whole life slowly starts to revolve only around the idea of wanting to see Arthur safe and successful, leaving a trail of his dead loved ones, betrayed friends, and his innocence, sense of who he is (as stated by Gilli), freedom (being a magic user), and happiness along the way. If all that sacrifice is not love (bromance or otherwise), then I don't know what is. As for stage, he has played homosexual characters in two plays. The first one is as "Jimmy 'Rosehips'" who is a suspect in a recent murder in the play called "A Prayer for my Daughter." He is associated with Vietnam War Veteran Sean who treats him as a 'daughter' but may or may not actually use him as a catamite. In the second act of this play, he is forced to strip down to full-on nudity, which he ultimately uses to turn the tide: seducing an older man who is his interrogator by sitting on his lap but then stealing his gun away. His most recent gay character is as "Carlos" in the play "Our Private Life." Here he plays a compulsive fantasist in a Colombian village who believes he was abused as a child. Outside his professional roles, Colin is very popular with both fangirls and fanboys and gay men due to his pixie and twink looks and build, not to mention his sense of vulnerability. He is most often linked with costar Bradley James because of their intense "bromance" on and off screen, as evidenced by the Video Diaries, Quests, Road Trips, Interviews, and even sightings of them together everywhere outside of work (much to the glee of their fans).
