It sounds like a Funnel Web Spider or just a common House Spider.
The common black house spider eats redback spiders. This probably explains why redbacks are uncommon inside the house. Both redbacks and black house spiders are shy (especially the redback). A house spider will get to recognize you if you feed it ;)

After 6 months of sharing insect kills from the same web created by an unkown species, the white tail attacked and killed the common house spider after it (the common species) dragged in a blowfly ( talk about getting stabbed in the back by your roommate)
