Lettuce has a fairly long tap root for a reasonably low growing plant. This is because it requires planty moisture to remain turgid.

Every gymnosperm produces naked seeds. In addition, many gymnosperms have needle-like or scale-like leaves, and deep-growing root systems.
As far as I have researched and have been told by an arborist (as I have one in my backyard), the root system is as deep as about half the height of the tree. The Rubber Tree is also considered to have an extremely invasive root system. It is not recommended that it be grown near buildings or walkways.
For example, hard-packed soil will prevent potatoes from growing large, due to compression. Sandy soil will not allow a root system to support tomatoes or corn.
