Basically the disadvantages come down to storage, filling and range of the car based on capacity of the available fuel tanks.

  • Hydrogen is transported in high pressure cylinders and tanks
  • It is very dificult to store as a Liquid This means that as a gas you can't get very much inside a tank so to transport enough to run a car you need 3 to 5 times as many trucks, trains or pipe line capacity to supply it.
  • The equiepment to pump the fuel from the storage tank into your car is expensive
  • Finally to upgrade you will lose most of your trunk space and still only go about 1/3 as far on a tank.

What is the biggest problem to do with hydrogen powered cars?

It's mainly centered around the process of extracting hydrogen, which in and of itself is not a terribly efficient process, and negates a lot of whatever there is to be gained by using hydrogen vehicles.Another disadvantage is that there are none on the road... you can introduce an electric car like the Tesla, Chevy Volt, etc, because people have electricity already... who has hydrogen on-hand?

How are hydrogen cars powered?

Generally, a Hydrogen powered car runs by using hydrogen and oxygen to create electricity in a fuel cell, which is then used to power an electric traction motor that runs the car. Direct ignition-engines are more difficult and dangerous to 'run'.

Is using hydrogen as a fuel in cars a chemical change?

To get Hydrogen as a fuel to be used in electric vehicles, the hydrogen combines with oxygen giving of 2 electrons which powers the application. The waste product is H20 (water!). If you want a simple yes or no, then the answer is Yes, because you are converting Hydrogen into Water to produce electricity.
