During what is known as the Middle Ages, powerful monarchs controlled large territories through the force of the soldiers loyal to them. The "kings" castle was the monarch's residence and the common people known as serfs, grew food and livestock, which in part was given to the ruling monarch. The king in medieval days was the final authority on all matters concerning Law and Order. In return the king offered protection to the serfs in his or her kingdom.
