What is a hamsa?

Best Answer

The hamsa, a talisman that supposedly protects the wearer or householder from the evil eye, is a popular symbol throughout North Africa and the Middle East where it is used by Muslims, Jews and followers of other faiths alike.

Though nobody knows for certain, it's believed to originate from the ancient Phoenicians who lived in Carthage around 3000 years ago. As the Phoenicians followed a Canaanite religion (which, though classified a Semitic religion has little in common with Judaism) which pre-dates Islam and existed alongside Judaism, the hamsa is neither Jewish nor Muslim despite both groups using it.

It's a trinket against the evil eye.

This is a frivolous practice which has little or no basis in Jewish law. The best thing for spiritual protection is to keep the Torah.
