Best Answer

A heater plug (Glo Plug) is a device fitted in the cylinder head (extending into the combustion chamber) of a diesel engine.

It is used to pre heat the combustion chamber to assist in starting, especially in cold climates.

Normally used for the first start of the day, the glo plug is activated by holding a button, switch or ignition key for a few seconds prior to activating the starter.

Once the engine is started the glo plug is de- activated and normal compression ignition is achieved.
