In the first Book of the Old Testament there is an account of a great flood which covered the entire earth for 40 days and 40 nights. One man , Noah, who was warned by God that the flood was coming. built an ark (boat) and saved his family and the animals . There is a question as to whether it was a historical event, but it is certainly an important part of our culture and there are many literary references to it.
There have been many tragic floods throughout history. Two that come to my mind are the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in August ,2005 and the tsunami in December , 2004.
