The word pagan can apply to anyone who is not a follower of one of the monotheistic religions (Christianity, Judaism and Islam), so that refers to almost everyone who has ever lived on this planet. That is a very broad category of "customs" to be asking about! However, specifically religious customs of pagans include thanking the gods for whatever one has, especially food, by offering a small amount of it to the gods in a symbolic way; honoring the gods with songs and praises and by telling the myths about them, and living in harmony with human society and the natural world. [edit by thedawnbringer] The definition of Pagan as one who does not follow one of the major monotheistic religions, originated from Christinaity. The origin of the term actually predates this, and comes from the Latin Pagani, which means "of the heath" or "country dweller". Popular Pagan customs which remain today, or which have their origins in Paganism, include May day, Yule, Midsummer and Midwinter, and many more.

What is the origin of why some Christians don't put up the Christmas tree?

Some don't because it's directly traceable to a pagan custom. I suspect that some, possibly a majority, of those who cite that reason may actually be more influenced by the fact that putting up a Christmas tree is a pain in the rear, and "It's a pagan custom, you heathen!" is just a convenient excuse for not doing what they didn't really want to do anyway.

Who started putting lights on the Christmas trees?

hundreds of years ago, this used to be a pagan custom, they started out with real wax candles and finally graduated to electric lights in the 20th century.
