Never heard the term. The terms "advance guard", "rear guard", and "flank security" have been used. A sentry is a guard (lone soldier, sailor, airman, or marine). A "point man" is a form of guard, he is leading a trail of men...either a patrol or large body of troops thru hostile territory; it is he that will make contact first or become a casualty first, the process of which will automatically warn the following men...thus the dangers of being assigned the duty of a "point man." If the point man is a veteran at it (experienced) then he'll know what to look for, what to listen for, and be able to warn his trailing party whats up before the S--- hits the fan. That would be a good point man! It was very wise to put your best man at the point, those men saved a lot of lives...but then a lot of good men were killed or seriously wounded doing that job too.
A platoon leader was a Lieutenant. Its quite possible that a company commander (Captain) could have told his LT, "...your platoons got guard tomorrow...", consequently the term "platoon guard." But the term must have been extremely informal as no one in the US Army ever used it...unless its a new 21st century term.

That's what I want to know too. The commie guard dealing with most of the platoon shortly after they got captured looks at least strikingly similar to Dan Akroyd.
