Rat - a large group of medium to large rodents with long tails, five toes on the rear feet, four on the front, constantly growing incisor teeth and relatively high intelligence. Most known species: rattus rattus (black/roof/tree/fruit rat), rattus norvegicus (wharf/sewer/brown/Norway rat) Both dwell in civilization eating refuse from humans and both breed rapidly. Laboratory and pet rats are descended from Norway rats.
The fear of rats, and also of mice, is called Muriphobia.
