Here's what it depends on: where you live, how old is your house, and how warm you like to keep your house.

In the middle of winter in Ohio, when it's 25 degrees outside, in an old house with poor insulation, old windows, and lots of drafts, if you keep the thermostat on 70 degrees you will probably pay around $500-$600 a month for gas heat, at current (2009) prices of around $1.27 per ccf.

If you get a programmable thermostat and turn it down to around 62 when you're at work, 66 at night, and 68 when you're at home, it will probably be around $300-$400 a month.

Most of the northeast and Midwest are going to be around the same. Some places like Cleveland, Chicago, and Buffalo will be colder and more expensive. So will New England north of Boston.

If your house is was built after 1975 or so, it will probably have fiberglass insulation and double-pane windows, which could reduce the cost by $100-$200 a month.

If you are going to live in your house for a long time and you add insulation inside the walls and replace old doors and windows with new, energy-efficient ones, you can cut the cost in half, at least. There are a few new houses in this country that are extremely energy-efficient and heating them in the middle of winter in a cold climate takes less energy than a 100-watt lightbulb, or about 40 cents a month.

Is the average gas bill more expensive than the average electric bill?

At the moment, gas prices are incredibly high in cost. However, electricity costs are constantly increasing which means that it all comes down to the electrical appliances used within your household. If you have fairly new appliances with energy saving stickers on them, I would assume your electrical bill would be more reasonable than your gas bill, currently.
