Self-adjusters for drum brakes expand as the brake shoes wear so the gap between the shoes and the drum remains roughly constant throughout the life of the shoes. They are almost always located at the bottom of the brakes, separating the two shoes. Teeth on the gear of the self-adjusters engage with a metal tab when you apply the brakes. As the brakes wear, the metal tab turns the gear and causes the self-adjusters to unscrew and expand. Make sure when installing self-adjusters that you buy the adjuster for the correct side of the car. The left and right side adjusters are threaded in opposite directions. If you put the wrong one on the wrong side, it will tighten instead of expand and eventually your brakes will not work correctly.

What is a self-adjusting brake kit?

The self adjuster brake kit is replacement hardware for the adjuster for the brake shoes. If there is a problem with the adjuster it might allow the brakes to back off causing a brake failure. If you are changing this yourself be aware there is a left and right side, if these are mixed up or not installed correctly you will have a brake failure. Best to leave it to a qualified mechanic.
