Best Answer

A split ring is a name for a ring of spring steel that is made like two turns of a regular spring wound very closely. Usually they are large and used to hold keys together, so they are commonly thought of as key rings.

There is also a smaller version of this used in jewelry to attach chains and pendants.

What is the purpose of using slip rings?

This is the standard answer for both split ring commutator and slip ring. A split ring commutator is to reverse the current direction through an armature every half turn A slip ring is to ensure that the current continue to flow to the external circuit Last bit of additional information. Carbon brush ensure that the slip ring are in contact with the circuit containing the external load *Note: Do not get confused with split ring commutator(d.c.generator) & slip ring(a.c. generator)

How does the commutator reverse the current in a motor?

Commutator is a split ring which reverses the current .when the commutator turns around due to magnetic force and because of it even the current gets reversed

What is RMU?

An 'RMU' is a 'ring-main unit', a type of switchgear used to connect distribution transformers to an underground, secondary-distribution (11 kV in the UK), cable ring-main system. It enables the transformer to be disconnected from the ring main, and it also enables the ring main itself to be 'split' where the RMU is installed. Each of the three switches within an RMU usually incorporates an 'earth' (ground) position, which will enable either the transformer itself, or the ring main to be earthed for safety reasons before any maintenance work can proceed.

Switch that regularly reverses the current in some motors?

A switch that reverses the direction of the current in a motor is called a forward reverse drum switch. It is a single phase motor that turns from clockwise to counter clockwise.

What is the function of a split ring commutator?

The split rings cause the direction of the magnetic field in the armature to change direction as the motor rotates. If this didn't happen the motor would not rotate. Slip rings can be used for an AC motor which causes the direction of the magnetic field to change with the AC waveform.

Does a ring that was given as a gift have to be returned after a split?

When a gift is given, its your to do with as you please. Give it back or keep it, its up to you. If it was an engagement ring and the marriage didn't take place-I believe you have to give it back. Now if you paid for your own ring and can prove it, then keep it.
