That depends. If the car is an automatic the flywheel has 153 teeth. With a manual transmission it also has 153 teeth unless the car was equipped with a heavy duty clutch, which WAS optional in the 1972 Nova, but it is pretty rare. Most of the 168 teeth heavy duty clutches were installed behind big blocks. Yours is most likely a 153 tooth. One easy way to check this is looking at the starter bolts. If they are parallel with the flywheel, then it is a 153 teeth flywheel. If they are diagonal with the flywheel, then it is a 168 teeth, which also means that an 11" clutch is most likely installed as well.
Internal mounted between the engine and transmission.
You'll have to measure the flywheels. If the 67 came out of a 6-volt car, it's got a 180mm flywheel on it. (The change from 6 volts to 12 volts happened in the 1967 model year, but some 1967s could have 6-volt systems. Volkswagen was well known for making a change to a model only after they ran out of the old parts.) The 1972 had a 200mm flywheel. If the 1967 engine has a 180mm flywheel, put the 200mm flywheel from your old engine on the new one. If the flywheels are the same, the 1967 engine will go right in. This doesn't mean you won't slow down, though; the 1967 engine is smaller than the 1972 engine.

The type I Beetle engine was used in the VW bus (with slight mods) from 1950 to 1971. In 1972, the bus received the new type IV engine, although certain counrties continued to use the type I Beetle motor. So yes. Check your flywheel to ensure it is the correct one.
