Firstly, you're only going to have one if you have an automatic gearbox and even then, only on certain models. A/T stands for Automatic Transmission and Mode therefore means that the automatic transmission can be placed in different modes using this button.
I guess the default mode is with the button in the central position. This is called the auto mode and when in this position, nothing shows on the dash. In this position the transmission will automatically change from power to economy mode as the conditions require. If you're driving steadily without pressing hard on the accelerator, the gearbox will change up as soon as it can. If you hit the pedal hard the gearbox will drop a gear or two and increase the revs/performance.
Push the button forward and you'll be in power mode - "PWR" will show up on the dash. In this mode the gears will be kept as low as possible and the revs are allowed to go higher, even when you're not hitting the accelerator hard. This should result in faster performance. Beware though that your fuel economy may drop drastically in this mode.
Finally, by knocking the switch into its backwards position you'll light up the dash with "HOLD". This is thehold mode. In this mode when you set off from a standing start you will be in 2nd gear and the gearbox will change up as soon as it can, keeping the revs low. In theory this should be the most economical setting. It can also help stop wheel spinning in slippery conditions and could be useful for instance when pulling a trailer out of a muddy field.
Personally I keep my Pajero in the auto mode and occasionally knock it into power mode if I'm feeling racy at the traffic lights. I always flick it back into auto once I've burnt off the boy-racers
A bad A/T Control Relay switch may be the reason your light is blinking on the N of the shift gear in your Mitsubishi Montero Sport. The part will need to be ordered from the dealership to fix it.
I replaced transmission fluid yesterday on2003 Montero Sport today when I'm driving the A/T Temp light came on what is that mean/
its amisubishi montero 1994 safari and don 't no how put power steering in the car
The Mitsubishi Montero is RWD but only when it is in 2WD, when shifted into 4WD it obviously uses all 4 wheels. But when just going around the city and high way it is RWD.
My 2000 has it too. Haven't tried it to see if a 'hold' light lights up, but the owner's manual also says something about this light. It's called an A/T mode change switch. In the book, they only repeated the info about the light. http://www.mitsubishi-forums.com/t3671-rvr-a-t-switch.htm I have a 2001 Mits Montero Sport, and I have found that when you are climbing a grade, your 'automatic transmission' will automatically downshift when pressing the accelerator to the floor. If you don't want it to shift on it's own, use the A/T button to hold your transmission in the gear you want it. A hold light will illuminate on your dashboard underneath the speedometer if the A/T light has been depressed. Hope this helps!
Details of the A/T mode options for the Pajero can be found here : http://www.pocuk.com/faq/atmodeswitch.htm The Mitsubishi Pajero Owners Club is the World's largest, most popular, free-to-join community for owners of the Mitsubishi Pajero, Shogun, Montero, Raider, Challenger, EVO and Pinin ranges of Japanese (import) SUV 4x4 offroad vehicles. http://www.pocuk.com
My 2001 Mitsu Monty Sport also had the HOLD light come on. What does it mean? I'm afraid to call Mitsu because every visit somehow costs >$1000! Press the button on the dashboard "A/T Mode" changeover switch, which switches the driving mode between Normal and Hold. From the Owner's Manual: "Select the "HOLD" mode when starting your vehicle on a road surface slippery from snow or the like, and the vehicle will start smoothly...other than "L" position, the vehicle starts in second gear." BTW, red brake light is probably the emergency brake light switch, which might just need cleaning or adjustment.
