A theatrical name, or "stage name," is one adopted by an entertainer other than his own. The reasons for doing this vary somewhat, but generally a theatrical name is selected to enhance the entertainer's career and public image. Some well-known examples:

Marion Mitchell Morrison --> John Wayne

Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta --> Lady Gaga

Frank Carlton Ferrana, Jr. --> Nikki Sixx

The changes can be more subtle, and are often based on an entertainer's real name. Madonna is actually Madonna Louise Ciccone; Angelina Jolie was born Angelina Jolie Voight.
