impeahment
The legislative branch can exercise the power of impeachment to remove the President or a Supreme Court justice from office, provided the official has committed an impeachable offense.
The House of Representatives has sole authority to bring Articles of Impeachment (like criminal charges and an indictment) against the President or justice. The Senate has sole authority to conduct the trial determining whether the official is guilty of the charges against him or her. This division of responsibility is supposed to help ensure the process is fair and not used as a political weapon.
Only two presidents (Andrew Johnson and Bill Clinton) and one Supreme Court justice (Samuel Chase) has ever been impeached by the House of Representatives, but all three were acquitted at their Senate trials, so they remained in office.
Impeachment is most often used to remove lower federal court judges from office.
