The Union Jack (or Union Flag) is the National Flag of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. It is comprised of the crosses of St. George (England-red cross on white background), St. Andrew (Scotland- white saltire, or X-shaped cross, on blue background), and St. Patrick (Ireland- Red saltire on white background).
The Union Jack refers to the official flag of the United Kingdom. The design of the flag is that one of the Cross of Saint Andrew counterchanged with the Cross of Saint Patrick, over all the Cross of Saint George.
It is the British Flag, adopted around l707 in principal form there are two- some say three superimposed crosses, one square type ( Saint George) and the other Diagonal ( Saint Andrews)- the latter symbolizing Scotland. It is almost beyond argument the Confederate Flag was inspired by the Union Jack in its design. From Sandhurst to Sanders!
The Union jack flag is made up from the flags of the United Kingdom.
It should be noted that the correct term is Union flag. It does not become the Union Jack until it is positioned in the corner of the flag, as in the Australian and New Zealand flags. It is often stated that a flag consisting of just the Union Jack may be given this term when flown from a ship's mast at sea. Controversy remains over this particular assertion. Interestingly, the "Jack" flown by ships in the US Navy is also known as the "Union Jack".
Either way, there is no such flag as the "Union Jack flag".
