A state may determine the marital status of one of its citizens as being divorced by way of an ex parte divorce proceeding provided that the divorcing party has met a residency requirement to become a citizen of the state regardless of the residence of the other spouse. Under the Full Faith and Credit Clause of the U.S. Constitution, an ex parte decree of divorce must be recognized throughout the United States once it is granted to a resident of the state granting the divorce.
