An IP address is the numerical label assigned to any device that uses the internet to communicate with other computers. Every time you type a domain name (www.coolexample.com) in your browser, a DNS server translates the domain into an IP address. Your computer then uses the IP address to find the web page.

∙ 14y agoAn IP address is an Internet Protocol address. It is used to identify all the different computers and websites on the internet. Each IP address is unique. It is what enables you to do things like send a message in a chat program to another computer, and out of all the millions of computers in the world, it arrives at the correct one.
An IP address is made up of 4 separate numbers, each between 0 and 255, and arranged with dots in between them. All websites have an IP address. For example, the IP address for Google.com is 216.239.59.147 and that is how the internet identifies it. Obviously a number like that is hard for humans to remember, so there is a system known as Domain Name System, that matches an IP number with an address that we can type. You could still use the number if you knew it though. So if you were to go to your browser's address bar and type in http://216.239.59.147 you would be brought to Google.com as if you typed the normal address in the text form.
The internet is growing every day and new computers and websites are always joining it. A new IP address system is being devised to deal with this, as the old system will run out of unique numbers.
