Where did the moroons originate from?

The Moroons originated from Africa. They were slaves of the Spaniards. They were brought over from West Africa (mainly The Gold Coast- now known as Ghana and also Nigeria) initially to help work on the sugar plantations. This was due to the indigenous Arawak Indians who the Spanish met there were eliminated through diseases and hard labor. When the British invaded Spanish Town, Jamaica and fought the Spanish and defeated them the slaves ran into the mountains and the Spanish fled to the north of Jamaica but mostly to Cuba. The terrain of the mountains and jungle was similar to that of Africa so they were comfortable unlike their European counterparts who habituated on the mainland. The Moroons have very strong links and ties to Ghana. This is evident in the language they speak called Kromanti which is similar to Akan. It has also been noted that the name of the cow horn they blow called Abeng is from the Twi language of the Akan from Ghana. The Moroons were known for their fierce resistance to oppression and fought the British fearlessly for years. They often went on raids like guerrilla warfare to the plantations and attacked them, killing, stealing their provisions and taking the slave women to help develop their communities which they had in the mountains. Two of the most famous war heroes were Nanny, although I believe her name was Nana and has been misconstrued with time, and Cudjoe (Kojo). In their most basic phonetics they are Ghanian names. The former a female was notorious for her spiritual powers which she used to her advantage during battles as she often led the Maroons on raids and battles against the British. K Awodipe
