Organic waste Organic waste is a major component of municipal solid waste. Most originates from household waste but commercial, institutional and industrial waste can also contain significant proportions of organic waste e.g. market waste. Organic waste is biodegradable and can be processed in the presence of oxygen by composting or in the absence of oxygen using anaerobic digestion. Both methods produce a soil conditioner, which when prepared correctly can also be used as a valuable source of nutrients in urban agriculture. Anaerobic digestion also produces methane gas an important source of bio-energ

The answer is largely within your question. Organic waste is organic (subject to decomposition by microorganisms), while plastics are not. It is important to note however that there exist now some organic plastics that are biodegradable (consider that Sun Chips bags are now made of biodegradable plastic).

What is organic waste?

Biodegradable waste is a type of waste, typically originating from plant or animal sources, which may be broken down by other living organisms. Waste that cannot be broken down by other living organisms may be called non-biodegradable. Biodegradable waste can be commonly found in municipal solid waste (sometimes called biodegradable municipal waste, or BMW) as green waste, food waste, paper waste, and biodegradable plastics. Other biodegradable wastes include human waste, manure, sewage and slaughterhouse waste.

What are some things that are non biodegradable?

Material that's nonliving (excluding dead organic matter) is non-biodegradable. Plastic, metal, styrofoam, and corrugated cardboard are non-biodegradable, while a dead tree, animal waste, and skin cells are biodegradable. A difference between biodegradable trash and non-biodegradable trash is that the biodegradable can be thrown out into a backyard and eventually turn into soil or something that other living things can reuse, while non-biodegradable trash can be recycled, as in reused for its original purposed, usually for humans.
