The Greatest American Invention:

The Airplane

By Jae-Wook Did you ever hear and see an airplane in the clear blue sky? Did you ever wonder how it was made or what is was? Well I'll tell you. In my opinion I think the greatest American invention is the airplane. The reason I think the airplane is the greatest American invention is that the airplane helps us go over long distances in a short amount of time. The airplane accomplished the dream that humans have pursued for a long time. The airplane also has been used for transportation. The airplane has been used in various wars to attack and defend against enemies. I think the airplane inspired people to go to outer space. Before the airplane was invented people used ships and wagons drawn from horses for transportation. It took hours, days, weeks, months, and even years to get somewhere far. For example a steamboat to France would take a few months but with the airplane it would only take a few hours. It was on the morning of December 17th, 1903 that the Wright brothers flew the first motor powered airplane. Orville Wright piloted the Flyer #2 while his brother Wilbur Wright timed the airplane. After that people tried to make airplanes go faster, go more distances, and fly at a higher altitude. Then in wars fighter airplanes were used to attack and defend against enemies. Airplanes were then and now used for military and civilian purposes. There are many reasons why I chose the airplane. I like the airplane because we can go farther in less amount of time. This is a benefit because people can see each other quickly and attend business faster. The airplane gives aid for countries that experienced a disaster. It put out fires before anyone is hurt. The airplane transports our troops into war quickly, defends our country, and gets our troops out of hostile areas quickly. The airplane gets people from one place to another safely and quickly. Another reason I chose the airplane is that without the airplane we would have never gone to space and still be riding cars and boats. Do you think that we would have even thought about going to space without the invention of the airplane? The airplane has made an impact to the world in many ways. First the airplane inspired humans to go to outer space. Second it helps us reach places where cars and boats can't. Airplanes have been used for mail, passenger, and reconnaissance. There are now airplanes that go faster than the speed of sound. There are stealth and vertical landing and takeoff airplanes. Everyday people are making new airplanes and improvements. From the Wright brothers achievement we look at our high tech and advanced aircraft. What is an airplane you may ask? An airplane is anything that flies. Gliders, airships, airlines, fighters, bombers, and spaceships are all types of aircraft. An airplane must have wings, body, a tail, and a rocket or propeller in order to fly. The faster an airplane goes the more slanted its wings have to be. Although the Wright brothers flew the first motor powered airplane Leonardo da vinci was the first one to design and aircraft but is was unknown whether they were built and tested. Helicopters are also aircraft. In conclusion and by giving you proof you can see that the airplane is the most important and greatest invention in American history. Airplanes have made a huge impact to the human society. Without airplanes we would just wonder what is in space. Airplanes have many jobs and types. Airplanes are used for defense, offense, military, and civilian purposes.
