It is your starter. It's not going out. Just a manufacturing flaw. Mine does the same.

this is normal and nothing to worry about. Almost all vehicles make a whining noise in reverse Ford Mondeo's sound the same reversing as they do going forwards no whining also VW Passatt i think the Golf's are the same also maybe modern technology has improved this. probably bad enough listening to your wife whining you can do without your car doing it.
possibly worn shock absorber rubbers,loose mounting bolts,broken mounts. more info needed to diagnose
if its a vr6 good chance its the starter sticking. does it sound a bit like a grinding noise? if so, i wouldn't worry about it too much, mines been doing it for the last 20k miles.
