Fire fighting is an obvious dangerous job, the reasons why is that the environments you work under are usually dangerous, Fire will burn you, you run the risk of getting run over working an accident on the highway, patients may be suffering from mental illness and can be combative. Every fire is unpredictable, and simple grease fires can turn into Flashovers and back drafts.

Yes of course you have gear and training to lessen the risk. However signs can be missed, buildings can collapse. With modern polimers and petro chemicals used in housing construction and furnature what used to be wood smoke is now a soup of toxic gasses and chemicals. Quite possibly the most dangerous parts of the job are not related directly to fire itself but are related to lifestyle choices. The most common reason a fire fighter is killed on the job is not via flame or heat, but by heart attacks, followed by traffic collisions. The sad thing is that that can be limited by wearing seat belts and keeping your heart healthy by eating right and excercising.
