How can natural selection lead to changes in the characteristics of a population even though individuals within the population do not themselves change?

Every individual within a population is different. Some differences are minor, some major, some noticable, others not. These differences are all caused by mutation: a deviation from the DNA blueprint of the population, because reproduction of cells in the feotus is not perfect. The individuals that have mutations beneficial to survival & reproduction & nurturing of proginy outlast all the others, over time, as those mutations are passed onto their young. This is natural selection, which changes the population.

What is a term that describes why some individuals produce more offspring than others?

Organisms that are constantly exposed to dangers, which can kill them in mass, have evolved to reproduce in high numbers so that enough of a species will survive and continue the species. Survival of the fittest and natural selection is a common practice among organisms that reproduce fast and in high numbers.

Why is reproduction necessary for the survival of a species but not necessary for the survival of an individual organism?

because the gravity of the earth is forcing you to love me than your parents.

Sexual reproduction provides for what to occur?

# Survival of the species.

What can be harmful if it reduces the organisms chances for survival and reproduction?

There are 3 things that can be harmful if it reduces the organisms for survival and reproduction. The three things are changes in DNA, changes in phenotype and mutation .

He called the differential rate of reproduction 'Survival of the Fittest.'

Differential survival and reproduction is best described by which term?

Do you think that evolution by natural selection would occur if individuals with low fitness had just as much as a chance of surviving and reproducing as indiviuals with high fitness?

To survive and reproduce is the definition of high fitness!! So, there would be nothing to select if there was not differential reproduction and differential survival. Review what fitness means.

How does sexual reproduction decrease an organisms chance of survival?

Actually, sexual reproduction can increase survival of the overall population by creating diversity. It is more effective over asexual reproduction.

Is reproduction important to the survival of an individual?

No, reproduction is only important to the survival of the population/species after the individual has died. Reproduction in many cases has a high penalty on the survival of the individual that does reproduce, due to the extra efforts and risks that must be made to feed and care for the offspring.

Describe the three inferences Darwin made from his observations that led him to propose natural?

1. Production of more individuals than the environment can support will lead to a struggle among the individuals in a population resulting in the survival of a few. 2. Survival of the individuals will depend on inherited traits that will enhance their survival and reproduction. Those with traits that increase the probability of surviving will have a higher rate of survival and are likely to have more offspring than those who are less fit. 3. The ability of individuals to adapt to the environment will lead to a gradual change of the population retaining characteristics that accrue over generations source: Biology by Campbell and Reece

What is the definition survival and reproduction?

Survival and reproduction is the perpetuation of the species.

What characteristics must population first have for nautral selection to occur?

Individuals are selected, but in the population of organisms there are many variations, some better at survival and reproduction than others, and against the immediate environment, what natural selection really is, these beneficial variations will be selected.

What is the advantage of sexual reproduction if an organism is capable of reproducting asexually?

Sexual reproduction creates diversity, which in turn will increase the likelihood of survival for that population. By asexually reproducing, you eliminate these varieties and the population is more susceptible to death.

What is the 4 main points of natural selection?

natural selection (4 tenants) -genetic variation -overproduction of offspring -struggle for existence (competition) -differential survival and reproduction

What is the importance of reproduction in natural selection?

Everything! Survival is the race, but reproductive success is the finish line. Remember; individuals die, populations evolve.
