The attack by the Confederacy on Fort Sumter, and the fort's surrender was the catalyst that brought on the US Civil War. The attack by the Confederacy was ill advised in that the South did not have a standing army or any navy to speak of. The South was unprepared in April of 1861 to carry on a war.

Fort Sumter was a relatively new fort built to guard the busy Charleston, South Carolina harbor. It was a major fort and in 1861, it became a point of contention between the newly formed Confederacy and the United States. South Carolina was a radical state. It had a history of being such a place. The Confederates in Charleston demanded that US troops evacuate the fort, as it was now located in the span of control of the fledgling new Confederate nation. US President Lincoln hoped for a cooling off period and also had to relenish the fort with food supplies. Regardless of Lincoln's intentions the fort was bomabared with cannon fire and forced to surrender. This action saw Lincoln call for 75,000 volunteers to help end the rebellion. Fort Sumter, to many people was the beginning of what would become a US Civil War.
