The sugar. A single can of cola has the equivalent of 10 teaspoons of table sugar. Sugary drinks in general increase the risk of type 2 Diabetes and Heart disease. And don't forget about tooth decay and obesity. What about sodas with artificial sweeteners? By giving a sweet taste without any calories, artificial sweeteners may actually make us want to consume more sweet foods and drinks. This is, of course, not a good thing.
Caffeine and different drugs that can kill you or give you bad kidney problems. I would have to say all of it. Too much sugar and sodium. Sodium is not good for your heart. Sugar is just unhealthy and isn't good for you either. Also, too much carbonation causes yellow teeth with all that sugar.
The things that are in it! For example, the carbonic acid. It destroys your bones and teeth as time goes by. It also makes them yellowish, then brownish. Your bones will get weaker as time goes by.
There are several theories and reasons:
1) The sugar in the soda pop does not provide nutrition, and are so-called "empty calories". This means that although the sugar provides necessary energy, it does not provide any other essential nutrition, such as protein, fats, vitamins, minerals, etc.
2) The sugar in the soda pop is digested rapidly because its in solution thus causing a "sugar high" and "crash" later due to the body's natural response to maintain blood sugar levels.
3) The phosphoric acid in many brands of soda pop is thought to leak calcium from the bones of the body if taken in large amounts. Studies showed that young people that drank VERY large amounts had lower bone densities.
4) The sugar and acid in the soda pop can be bad for the teeth causing cavities.
5) The colorings in soda can stain the teeth. (Especially cola)
6) The artificial sweeteners used in soda pop are thought by some to be dangerous, however, the FDA has cleared all of them and says that they are safe. Some individuals can be sensitive to Aspartame and have to avoid it.
7) The dissolved carbon dioxide in the soda pop is thought by some to inhibit digestion.
8) Some studies have found that drinking regular soda or even Diet Soda made people hungrier, and thus even the empty calories did not "fill them up" causing them to overeat. If true, its by a not fully understood process. Its possible its due to the empty calories, the sweetness of the drink increasing appetite, or the nature of the food as a liquid which does not register with the body in the same way as solid food.
9) Its expensive! Water is nearly free in comparison to the cost.
10) The containers (although frequently recycled) are wasteful (creates trash & energy to create the product) in comparison to drinking water from a reusable container.
11) Water is green because its piped in a low-energy intensive way, where as soda pop needs to be shipped by truck, which is expensive, and polluting.
12) Many brands of soda pop have added caffeine that does not naturally occur in its flavoring agents. Although caffeine may have strong positive effects, it can be mildly addictive, cause nervousness, and in sensitive individuals other health problems.
13) The unnatural sweetness of soda pop may cause people to crave other sweet things, or not be satisfied with a food of normal sweetness, causing them to choose foods with more and more added sweeteners. There is also some evidence that foods with added sugar can be addictive with some people.
Soft drinks like sOda are bad for you if you have them to much because they have certain preservatives that are bad for you and including msg and locatives in some I wouldn't reprimand anyone from having a can or two but not alot more because of all the sugar content
