Near, near? It's rural, very rural. Small towns. Lots of vegetation. Nice climate. Hot during the day, cool at night. Some homes still don't have modern conveniences. Some still have dirt floors. No cable TV - - you have to get satellite. A lot of the people who live there are related to each other. The people don't worry that much about Don Goyo, El Popo, Don Gregorio (other names for the volcano). Cost of living is low for basics, high for luxuries. Property taxes are about US$225 per year on a typical home. Guys wear cowboy hats, snake-skin boots, big belt buckles. Jaripeo (rodeo) is a popular local sport. People marry young and immediately start having kids. Many young men choose to go north in search of economic opportunity. The drug war does not really touch that area. Families and towns tend to have huge parties that are way more expensive than they should be considering their income. Most families have members in the US that send money. In many towns, there are no real jobs available. If you want to make money, you have to start a home business. Family businesses put family members to work. The police are notoriously corrupt and people don't usually call them when they are a victim of a crime. Vigilantism and vendettas are common. People tend to have chickens or goats, or similar animals at home. If they have dogs, they sleep outside, roam free and never use a leash. They eat table scraps and whatever they can hunt on their own.
