Mesopatamia which means land between the rivers is thought by most to be the cradle of all civilization. It now is known as Iraq. Iraq is on the continent of Asia.

Numerous civilizations started in what is now known as Iraq and are considered the Mesopotamian Civilizations like: Sumer, Akkad, Chaldea, Assyria, and Babylonia. It is also notable that the Abbassid Caliphate was created and headquartered in Iraq although it was a successor state to the Umayyad Caliphate based in modern Syria.
A civilization is a complex culture in which large numbers of human beings share a number of common elements. Historians have identified the basic characteristics of civilizations. Six of the most important characteristics are: cities, government, religion, social structure, writing and art. Mesopotamia is considered the first civilization. Mesopotamia was an area near modern-day Iraq, Syria and Turkey. Mesopotamia is known as the "cradle of civilization" because it is where both the first civilization evolved and also where writing originated.

Mesopotamia (Iraq and eastern Syria) is sometimes called the cradle of civilisation because the first civilisation in history, the Sumerians, lived in the south of this area.
The Cradle of Civilization is more specifically Mesopotamia (which is in Iraq) however, some people extend the cradle of civilization into territory that is currently part of Iran because of Ancient Civilizations that were founded there.
