The State Quarter series wasn't introduced until 1999, so before that all quarters featured an eagle on the back. The State series ran up through 2008, featuring five different designs per year, in order of when each state became a state (Delaware was first, Hawaii was last). In 2009, there were six different designs, featuring Washington DC and five U.S. territories.
