Answer: In general, "open" architecture involves an entity that is built in a modularized manner, thus allowing the entity to be easily modified or upgraded by adding, deleting or replacing modules. Conversely, "closed" architecture involves an entity that is built homogeneously, making it difficult and expensive to subsequently modify or upgrade the entity. While Open & Closed architectural styles are generally associated with Engineering and Information Systems disciplines, a practical example can be found in office buildings. Some office buildings have fixed offices that have walls from floor to ceiling, rendering them difficult to modify. (Example of a "closed" architectural style). Other office buildings have large areas (i.e.: a complete floor) that can be turned into multiple offices by employing mobile office partitions and room dividers. (Example of an "open" architectural style).
