Protest Theology is synonymous with Protestant Theology. The root word "protest" is derived from the protest against the Roman Catholic church in the sixteenth century - a movement led by Martin Luther and other early reformers.

The beginning of the Protestant break from Roman Catholicism was not an event in ancient history. The Protestant Reformation began in the 16th Century. The intent of the Reformation was in fact to reform the practices and doctrine of Catholicism that religious people found to be corrupt and or not conforming to Biblical Scripture.

In 1517 Martin Luther, a German Augustinian Monk argued that the Bible and not the Pope was the central way to understand God's ways.
