The proximity effect in audio refers to a change in the frequency response in the bass region of all directional microphones (pressure-gradient microphones) when they come close to the sound source. The result of the change is a unnatural increase in the bass response of the microphones (bass tip-up). It is not exhibited in omni-directional microphones.
